The Feeling Of Tandem Skydiving

Tandem skydiving is an excellent way to experience this popular extreme sport. People, though, have a number of fears about skydiving. One myth is that you can’t breathe while you’re free falling. That is certainly not true, otherwise jumpers wouldn’t be conscious when they reached the ground. Another concern is that your chute won’t open. Because student chutes are typically safer than other chutes, this isn’t a realistic concern. Moreover, most chutes now are rigged with automatic opening devices, so not opening your chute on time shouldn’t really be a worry. Despite these reassurances, though, people still worry about the safety of skydiving. To that end, tandem skydiving is an excellent way to experience the sport without worrying about the nagging doubts that plague people’s minds.

Tandem is one of the most popular ways of experiencing jumping for first time skydivers. Students are subjected to about thirty minutes of instruction. During those thirty minutes, they meet the instructors they will be jumping with. They also view instructional videos about the jump, go over safety procedures, and get fitted to the equipment they’ll be using. Additionally, students learn how to leave the aircraft, how to free fall, and what to do in terms of body position during the landing cycle.

Welcome Aboard

After the training session, tandem students and instructors board the plane for the fifteen to twenty minute flight to the drop zone. While waiting to approach the area where exiting will take place, instructors make final reviews about procedures with students. When the time comes, instructors and students leave the plane at about fourteen thousand feet. Free fall lasts only a few minutes. Once the chute finally opens, the gentle glide back to earth lasts anywhere from five to ten minutes.

Occasionally, instructors will allow students to help steer the chute to the landing zone. This helps students get the feel of the chute. It also helps students who wish to continue their skydiving training and become certified divers themselves. Skydiving is a fairly dangerous sport. However, tandem skydiving is a great way for novices to experience the sport without the worry and danger.

Scoring With The Sand Wedge

The sand wedge gets no respect. Many weekend golfers use it just for getting out of greenside bunkers. That’s because it’s hard to hit from the fairway. Even veteran golfers sometimes have problems hitting it from the fairway. But in the hands of a skilled player, the sand wedge is a potent offensive weapon that can help dramatically lower your scores and chop strokes off your golf handicap.

The key to transforming the sand wedge into a scoring club, as I tell students taking my golf lessons, is understanding how best to use it for full shots from the fairway and for touch shots around the green. Learning how to hit a sand wedge in these situations takes time and practice. It also takes concentration. But it’s worth it. If you looking to take your golf game to another level, the sand wedge is just what the doctor ordered.

Getting Out Of Trouble

Slashing strokes off your golf handicap means making the right decisions. It’s also means not compounding your mistakes. For example, weekend golfers who hit bad drives often compound their mistakes by taking a 5-iron or hybrid and trying to blast their way out of trouble, which is difficult if the rough is deep. Mis-hitting the shot, they find themselves still in deep rough facing another tough shot.

You have two goals when you hit into trouble. The first is finding a way to get out of trouble and onto the fairway with the least amount of risk. The second is hitting the ball solidly. A sand wedge helps you achieve both goals. It’s leading edge cuts through deep rough, enabling you to hit the ball cleanly and solidly. Next time you’re in trouble, consider the sand wedge. It’s a sure-fire way of getting out of trouble.

Hitting Approach Shots

The sand wedge is also ideal for hitting approach shots. With 56 degrees of loft, it provides precision when you need it the most. When combined with a pitching wedge (48 degrees) and a loft-wedge (62 degrees), it is a key component of a three-club system for getting it close. For additional precision, add a gap wedge (52 degrees). Learn to hit these wedges with short, medium, and long swings, and you’ll have a great way of hitting the green from anywhere inside of 100 yards.

To hit fairway wedge shots, you must rotate the clubface open, just like you do with any full shot. Also, learn to trust the loft on your club. Resist the urge to try and help the ball in the air by focusing on your finish position, not on impact. For example, it you want to hit a 70 percent shot with your wedge, focus on finishing with a follow-through slightly shorter than a full-wedge follow-through, not on what happens to the ball.

Hitting Shots Close To The Green

The sand wedge works well for delicate shots around the green. These are shots you can’t afford to mis-hit because they can cost you strokes. To hit them with a sand wedge, you must learn to control trajectory with the club. You can learn to hit wedge shots low or high by making some simple setup adjustments, instead of changing the way you swing.

For a low shot, strengthen your grip (turn your hands away from the target), move the ball back in your stance, and close your shoulders. Keep the clubface aimed at the target. For a high shot, weaken your grip (turn your hands toward the target), move the ball forward in your stance, and open your shoulders. Again, keep the clubface aimed at the target. The club follows your shoulder line and produces the right loft.

One Drill For The Sand Wedge

Many drills teach you how to hit a sand wedge. But if you have time to practice only one, use the Two Tee Drill:

To grove a shallower path into the ball, take a tee and break it in half. Stick the pointy half in the ground an inch behind the ball, angled at the target. Take a second tee and stick in the ground an inch in front of the ball, also angled at the target. Now hit practice shots, clipping both tees from the grass.

If you’re swing is too steep, you’ll catch only the second tee. If you’re swing is too shallow, you’ll catch only the first tee. Hit both tees and you’re hitting it pure.

Don’t disrespect the sand wedge. It’s more versatile than you think. In addition to a greenside bunker, use it for getting out of the rough, hitting approach shots inside of 100 yards, and executing delicate shots around the green. Master the sand wedge and you’ll have a great tool for lopping strokes off your golf handicap.

Advanced Blackjack Strategy

Blackjack card counting is an advanced technique to win on blackjack. A player must first learn the basic strategies of blackjack before learning “counting”. By learning the technique of counting you will have the odds with you.

The basic concept of blackjack counting is that a deck filled with 10s and aces will be to your advantage. While the deck of the dealer is filled with smaller cards but is to the dealer’s advantage. Simply put, when the deck is in your favor bet to the maximum, when it’s with the dealer’s bet minimum.

This is because a deck filled with 10 increases the chance of the dealer getting bust. You on the other hand can just opt to stand. In an opposite manner, a deck filled with smaller cards makes the dealers chance to bust less. If you know the deck is filled with 10s or smaller cards, this can give you the advantage of knowing what strategy to use.

The dealer must then always hit until having a soft 17. To hit with a hand of 10 & 6 and knowing the deck is filled with 10s is a bad idea.

If the deck is filled with aces, there is high chance that you’ll hit blackjack. When the player has blackjack, the pay off odds are 3:2. The dealer will only win on the other hand if he also gets a blackjack. That’s why a deck filled with aces is always to the player’s advantage.

Blackjack counting is not done by memorizing each card that has come out of a 6 deck shoe of cards. If you are able to do that, I’d be in awe: you should be in the world records book or maybe even the loony bin.

Blackjack card counting is done by assigning the different card numbers with different point values. Always remember to pick a system that is easy to remember. This will cause fewer mistakes and you will lose less money.

As stated above, you will assign a point value for each card and you will have to add the value of the cards that have come out. This is called the running count. Based on the plus/minus strategy, here are the values assigned.

2, 3,4,5,6 = +1;
7, 8, 9 = 0;
10, J, Q, K, Ace = -1

To illustrate this more clearly: The first card dealt is an ace, so we start by having -1. Then 6 is the next card dealt so we add 1. This makes the run count back to zero. Then a 3 and 4 follows, making the run count now 2.

After figuring the run count, you can try to figure the true count. You take the running count you have and divide it with the number of decks remaining from the shoe.

The true counts tell you the appropriate bet size and you can base your strategy from there. Good luck!

Freecell Solitaire Strategy Guide

Freecell Solitaire is a highly popular game, made famous by Microsoft. Freecell is included in Windows, and is considered a classic solitaire game by many. Because you can see ALL the cards right from the start, there is no luck involved, making Freecell one of the few solitaire games which is based totally on the player’s skill.

Freecell is quite a hard game, but despite that, all deals (except for deal number 11982) are solvable in the 32000 deals in Microsoft’s version.

USING FREECELLS WISELY

The key to finishing Freecell is judicious use of the freecells. They should be used as temporary storage- only storing cards in them for a short time to help you move longer sequences around.

For example, suppose you had a column with the following (taken from deal 14396)
5 Hearts
Ace Spades
Ace Hearts
4 Clubs

In this situation, it is okay to move the 4 of Clubs to a freecell, because we know that right after that, we can move the two Aces to the foundation, and then move the 4 of Clubs back from the freecell onto the 5 of Hearts. See how the freecell was only used temporarily?

SAFE MOVES

There are certain moves you can make at any time in Freecell and know it wont “trap” you later on in the game. You can move the Aces (and the twos when they can be played), at any time, as no other cards depend on them. For the other cards, you can safely move them to the foundation if the cards one less in rank, of the opposite color, are already in the foundation. For example, you can safely move the 5 of Diamonds, if the black 4s have already been moved to the foundation.

Better Freecell games will automatically do these safe moves for your, so you can concentrate on the moves that matter, rather than having to manually make inconsequential moves.

THE NEED TO EMPTY COLUMNS

Your first goal in Freecell is to empty a column.

Why is this?

Because an empty column allows you to move longer sequences around. The size of the sequence you can move in Freecell is based on the number of available freecells and empty columns. The more empty freecells and columns you have, the longer the sequence is that you can move.

The formula for how many cards you can move is:
(number of empty freecells + 1) * 2 ^ (num empty columns)

For the less mathematically inclined, here is a table showing how many cards you can move in some different scenarios…

A B C
0 0 1
0 1 2
0 2 3
0 3 4
0 4 5
1 0 2
1 1 4
1 2 6
1 3 8
1 4 10
2 0 4
2 1 8
2 2 12
2 3 16
2 4 20

A:Empty Columns
B:Empty Freecells
C:Card Sequence Length

As you can see, empty columns are particularly valuable, as they allow you to move considerably longer sequences. By the time you have two columns free (particulaly with two or more freecells free), you can move very long sequences, and the game is usually quite easy to complete from there.

HOW TO EMPTY COLUMNS

So what is the easiest way to empty a column?

Start by emptying columns that don’t have any Kings in them. A column with a king can’t be emptied initially, because there is nowhere for the King to go.

Don’t just make moves because you can. Have some mini plan in mind, and only move cards if they help empty the column you are aiming for.

Another popular strategy is just to go straight for releasing the Aces, and then the 2’s, etc. This strategy is easier, and requires less thought. It will work for the easier games, but won’t help on the hard deals (such as deal 1941)

The most important strategy of all though, is to try and keep the freecells empty. If you can do that, and empty a couple of columns as well, then you should find it very easy to finish the game.

Big Air Equals Big Thrills With This New Extreme Water Sport

Kiteboarding or kitesurfing, if you don’t already know, is like snowboarding on water. This, behind a boat, is called wakeboarding. OK, now forget the boat and add a giant kite for the power source. The kite is controlled or steered using a control bar in the hands of the rider. The kite can be flown is specific patterns to generate greater power, or can be used to jump or fly through the air. We are not talking about little hops either; you can really get up and float for some serious air time. The power is directed to a harness by “hooking in”; this takes the load off the arms which helps reduce fatigue.

Kiteboarding is the fastest growing water sport in the world, and for good reasons.

The freedom of jumping 10, 20, 30ft off the water, without the necessity of a wave for a ramp, means that people who live near lakes can still fly through the air. Snowboarders love it as a summer alternative to riding on snow, not to mention there’s no lift ticket to buy. Windsurfers love it because you can kiteboard in less wind, and the gear fits in a economy car, instead of the truck, or trailer. Surfers can get out on the water when the surf is too low or blown out. Wake boarders are forced to rethink what big air really is, plus saving all the gas money they were putting into their boats every weekend. People who have never tried a board sport at all are getting into kiteboarding.

Ideal learning conditions include warm, flat and shallow water coupled with consistent wind. Being able to stand up after a gulp of water or a head first plunge is not only convenient but comforting. Having a boat right there where you need it saves time, as the beginner will end the kite surfing lesson far down wind from where he or she started.

Taking lessons with a qualified instructor is a must. The best thing to do first is to buy or rent a trainer kite, and watch an instructional video to get the basics down. Next, is the first three hour kiteboarding lesson, in which you will learn the safety issues and systems, setup of the kite, launching and landing, the wind window and power stokes, water re-launching and body dragging. From there you can continue with lessons or go practice on your own. The cost of equipment has come down over the years; a beginner setup will run $1000-$1500 for everything. Unlike many sports, such as snow

Skiing, kiteboarding is not something you should expect to be able to learn in an afternoon. Once you get it, you’ll be hooked.

Learn How to Surf in Just 1 Day

The first thing you need is the right surfboard. Most people make the mistake of trying to learn how to surf on a board that is too short. They see pros riding short boards and think that’s what they need. This is wrong and will only make you frustrated and give up trying to learn.

Make sure you get a surfboard that is a least 9′ long. You want it to be thick and wide as this will insure it’s buoyant and stable. A good choice for learning are those soft-top boards that are like giant Boogie Boards.

Practice these first steps on the sand before you get in the water:

1. Lay the board with it’s fin, (or skeg), down in the sand so the top, (or deck), is facing up.

2. Lay on the board on your stomach so your head is about 2/3 of the way towards the front, (or nose), of the board. Since you will spend a lot of time laying on your board you should invest in a rash guard or other UV protective surf shirt such as a StayDry Shirt to protect your stomach from getting a rash and your back from getting sunburned.

3. This next part is done all in one, quick motion: bring your hands up near your chest and grab the sides of the board then jump up and bring your feet up to where your hands are so you are now crouched on your feet and holding the board. Be sure you bring your feet up and under you so you are on your feet near the center of the board and that one foot is ahead of the other, (which foot is up to you).

4. Slowly stand upright as you bring your arms out to the sides for balance. Be sure to keep your knees bent.

Practice this technique,(called a ‘pop-up’), until you can quickly and smoothly jump to your feet in one motion.

Now you’re ready to hit the water.

Go to a beach that either has small, gentle waves or lots of whitewater you can ride on. Whitewater, (or soup), is the water that rolls towards the shore after a wave has broken. It’s the best place for learning as it will be easier to catch when you paddle. You can also have someone stand in the whitewater and push you into the wave while you lay on the board.

Enter the water pointing the nose towards the waves and lay on your board.

IMPORTANT: You want to lay on the board so that the nose of the board doesn’t dip into the water OR point up out of the water too high. When you start to paddle you want the nose to be parallel with the water, just skimming the surface.

To paddle keep your head up, your legs together on the board and cup your hands as you reach out into the water and draw them back along the sides of the board. Bring them out of the water down by your hips smoothly and without a lot of splash.

Once you’re out and white water is coming towards you turn and point your board towards the shore, lay in the correct spot, (nose skimming the water) and start paddling. When you feel the wave pick you up and start to push you without you having to paddle you’re ready to ‘pop-up’, (see step #3).

It will take some practice but by the end of the day you’ll have a lot of fun, get a great workout and be surfing. Just get yourself a rash guard and some board shorts and you’ll be a total surfer, dude!

5 Things You Need to Survive in the Smoky Mountain Wilderness

Before heading off on the trails of the Great Smoky Mountains, be sure you have all you need. In addition to a hiking buddy and people at home who know where you are and what your plans are, you need to carefully pack for the trip. While there are lots of things that it is very important to remember, these are the five items that you cannot hike without, regardless of your hiking experience. Load them up, and go safely!

1. Proper hiking boots

Without hiking boots well suited to your feet and hiking style, you risk ruining your entire trip. If you are doing just short, day hikes without a backpack, lighter weight shoes are acceptable. These are typically made from fabric and split-grain leather, breathe well and offer the least amount of support of all the hiking boots available. If you are planning on hiking with a backpack for a couple days or less, consider stiffer, mid-weight boots. These are the most versatile, and can definitely make a shorter hike easier than the lightweight boots. If you are planning to hike with a heavy pack or for a long period of time, get the heavyweight boot with the most support. Keep waterproofing and insulation in mind no matter what kind of boot you are considering.

2. Water

While rather obvious, there is nothing more important for your health on a hiking trip than water. No matter what kind of hike you are planning, your body needs water the entire time. Staying hydrated will ensure that you stay comfortable and healthy, and (with food) you will be able to complete your planned route. Think carefully about how much water you need to bring with you as it relates to your body, the terrain and the length of your hike. It is advisable to consult a doctor or outdoor expert on this.

3. First Aid Kit

No matter what anyone says, do not go on a hike without one of these. You need to at least have bandages, aspirin, antiseptic, an antihistamine, sunblock, insect repellent, gauze, iodine tablets, and duct tape. Consult with a wilderness expert or doctor before your trip to make sure you have everything you need and are prepared to handle any number of crises.

4. Rain gear/jacket

All year round, don’t forget a jacket. While it may be warm when you set out on your hike, after dark it can get cold. If it rains, you will want protection. Depending on your hiking plans, you may only need a plastic emergency poncho, although this provides little to no warmth. Bringing a jacket, even just a shell or waterproof windbreaker, is a great idea for any hiker or anyone heading out into the woods.

5. Backpack

You’ll need something to carry everything you need, won’t you? Even if you aren’t planning on taking a hike longer than a few hours, you’ll be taking at least water, first aid gear and a jacket, so a small bag will work fine, preferably waterproof. If you are taking a longer hike, consult with the salespeople at your local outdoor gear store as to how much stuff you will be taking with and the best way to pack it. Stick to internal frame backpacks—modern technology ensures that these new frames direct the weight at your hips, where you should carry most of it.

Never go into the wild unprepared. You cannot predict the future, nor can you be sure of what you will come across, no matter how much planning you do. Start with this essential items and expand to ensure that you have the best and safest trip possible.

Best Way to See Europe; Bus Tour or Hotel Stay? Good Science Fair Project

Best Way to See Europe; Bus Tour or Hotel Stay? Good Science Fair Project

by Mort Barish

Word count: 802

I have lived in Europe for over six years, and have made dozens of separate trips all over the Continent, Eastern Europe, the British Isles and the Mideast. Much of my time was spent on my own yacht where I had the opportunity to visit over 200 harbors all over the Mediterranean.

For those who really want to get into the innards of an area or part of a country, there are many different ways to have a great vacation and to really learn a lot about the area of interest. This subject is great for a science fair project.

Most people who visit Italy for example, go to Rome, Venice, Florence and perhaps to the Cinque Terre. In a similar manner, each country has its favorites. In Spain the Alhambra, in Greece its Santorini, in Turkey its Istanbul, in Israel its Jerusalem, in Croatia its Dubrovnik and so on.

There is a reason why these cities are selected by tour operators and vacation planners. They are all very special places for different reasons. Dubrovnik in Croatia, for example has its medieval walled city. On a busy day, as many as ten cruise ships will pull into the port of Dubrovnik as well as 500 or more tour buses with 40 passengers in each bus. Three large cruise ships can deposit as many as 13,000 tourists in one day. Imagine how many people ten ships will bring in. In addition to private boats, cars, and trains, perhaps 50,000 tourists will cram the medieval walls of old city Dubrovnik in just a few hours.

If you are really interested in savoring the sights, sounds, essence and soul of a country or a city, a bus tour may be your answer. It isn’t perfect but it isn’t too bad either. On a typical day, your bus tour guide will leave a 6.00 a.m. wakeup call for you. You will have two hours to get up, get dressed, enjoy a great breakfast, and get ready to board your bus at 8.00 a.m. You will then experience about two hours of a panoramic visit to the city of choice with your tour director constantly offering history and tidbits about the surroundings. You can ask questions and he or she will know all the answers for after all the tour guide was born in the area and is a professional tour guide. After the bus tour which ends about 10.00 a.m. you will then do a two hour walking tour of the city.

You may get a new guide for this tour, someone who was born in the city and knows everything about it. You will get a receiver that you plug into your ear so that even if you are 100 yards away from your guide, you will clearly hear everything that is said. After your two hour walking tour, you will get two hours of free time to shop the open markets, visit the stores, have a great local lunch and meet your tour bus about 2 pm. You will then tour nearby places of interest, make ½ hour stops and get back to your hotel about six p.m., just time enough to shower, change clothes, and get ready for dinner.

After ten days at this hectic pace, you will be a walking encyclopedia of the country being visited loaded with facts, tastes, smells, visions and attitudes. It is a far cry from a hotel vacation where your typical day is so much different. Get all this good stuff down for your winning science fair project. At a typical resort hotel, you get up at ten, have a leisurely breakfast, go down to the pool, sit in the sun for two hours to improve your tan, get ready for lunch, then back to the pool. On a busy day, you may play golf, go into town to shop and browse, and then back to your hotel. You will probably dine at the hotel every night, for after all, it is included in your costs. You will meet a lot of fellow Americans and probably a lot of Canadians as well. The hotel vacation will be restful, perhaps boring, certainly not as exciting as the bus tour, which will admittedly be exhausting. The choice is yours, which kind of vacation do you want.

If you decide to do a science fair project on this subject, you can gather a lot of information and graphics on a typical bus tour. Take Croatia for example. You will probably tour Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Bosnia and there is a ton of good stuff that you can use for your science fair project on these wonderful countries.
